Maafushi
About the Island
Welcome to Maafushi
Maafushi is the most visited local island in the Maldives and the undisputed capital of budget-friendly island tourism. Just 26 kilometres south of Malé, this compact island packs everything a traveller could want — pristine bikini beaches, a buzzing café strip, world-class dive sites, and a genuine slice of Maldivian local life.
The island has grown from a quiet fishing community into a thriving tourism hub without losing its authentic character. Local families run the majority of the guesthouses, restaurants, and water-sports operators, meaning your money directly supports the community. You can spend mornings snorkelling the house reef, afternoons on a sandbank excursion, and evenings watching fishermen bring in the day's catch at the harbour.
Maafushi is the ideal base for exploring the wider South Malé Atoll, with easy daytrips to nearby resort islands, uninhabited sandbanks, and some of the best reef dives in the country.
